The Social Security Administration is preparing for a wave of baby boomers to reach retirement age. It’s doing so with data centers and legacy systems that are downright ancient, according to a financial assessment from the agency.
Along with the outdated data centers, the SSA is wrestling with restructuring or replacing legacy systems and applications, particularly its Common Object Business Oriented Language (COBOL) software.

One of the oldest programming languages, COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language) turned 50 this past week. On December 6, 1960, COBOL was first used on two different makes of computers, proving that compatibility across systems could be achieved. To celebrate the anniversary, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History built out a new section of their website dedicated to documenting the language’s history; a related exhibit will open at the museum this spring. Every day I am part of an industry that is able to push the limits and is always evolving. Years ago I started my career with COBOL on MVS370 mainframes, then on to PowerBuilder in the age of Client Server, further into Java with Application Servers and now in the world of Mobile Technologies.

Micro Focus International PLC (MCRO.LN), a provider of enterprise application management solutions, Wednesday said it expected to achieve improved half-year revenue of $216 million and added that selective acquisitions will continue to be part of its growth strategy in future.
The Group’s Cobol Development, Modernization and Migration lines of business are expected to report revenues of $146 million which on a constant currency basis will show a year on year increase of 3.7%.
