The International Business Machines corporation is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. And to do so, the company has released a video lecture of its history that contains at least one very contestable assertion—that IBM gets credit for the personal computer.

All this talk about 2011 being the year of the cloud rings true. I say that because marketing hype is usually a bit ahead of the curve. But I realize that I’m using cloud computing a lot these days – and I don’t mean (necessarily) for work.

Tom West was project manager whose early work developing small business computers for Data General Corp. made him into a legend of the computer industry.
As depicted in the Tracy Kidder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1981 book “The Soul of a New Machine,” Mr. West drove his team of pocket-protected nerds through highly caffeinated 90-hour weeks in the late 1970s to develop a miniaturized descendant of the mainframe computer that saved the company.
Mr. West, who died May 19 at age 71, could be abrasive and imperious, but he spurred his team with slogans like, “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” He compared tech projects to pinball, where the prize for winning is another game—a new and more challenging project.

I said a couple of weeks ago that I have been working with iTech-Ed Associate Darren Pritchard at a site that was fairly new to SharePoint 2007. Darren has written some beginner’s guides for them and we thought other sites new to SharePoint might benefit from the information.

I want to know what’s going on on my network – what do I do? Well this seemingly simple question has a complicated answer, which is historical and all to do with the separate worlds of the mainframes and everyone else coming together to give us our current complicated environment. Just to summarize, mainframes used SNA and VTAM to communicate and everyone else used TCP/IP. Sometime in the 1990s, all this came together. In addition, we now have people on iPads and smartphones using our networks – in fact, we can have people on iPads and smartphones controlling our networks!

Ken Olsen, a pioneer of digital technology, died Sunday. Olsen, 84, co-founded and headed Digital Equipment Corp. (DEC), which developed one of the first commercial computers and helped usher in a new, post-mainframe world.
In a letter to Gordon College, which announced his death and where Olsen had been a trustee, Microsoft co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates said Olsen was “a major influence in my life, and his influence is still important at Microsoft through all the engineers who trained at Digital.”
